Convergence: New Landscape Paintings

This body of recent work explores the relationship between land, sky, and the suggestion of trees, hills, and distant mountains that converge between them. “I am interested in pushing the boundaries between representation and abstraction through the imagined reduction of familiar spaces and forms on the canvas’s surface.” Painted in bold painterly gestures, colors and values blend and collide, the surfaces are scratched, and layers of paint are removed to convey the rustic spirit of nature. Limiting his palette to a few colors eliminates Glenn Suokko’s instinct to render scenes with romantic realism, allowing a fresh, clean, contemporary interpretation of the expansive landscape outside his studio walls.
