Of Land and Sky
Preview this exhibition of new paintings on view at our gallery in Vermont, opening May 1, 2025
I am interested in exploring landscape painting as a structure, as an arrangement of elements, rather than as a depiction of a recognizable scene.
These recent paintings are inspired by familiar elements—land, mountains, skies—but they are not literal representations of actual views. In this work, the imagery is reduced and abstracted or simplified to suggest something greater. They are painterly observations of visual experiences as a way to convey brief moments of looking and feeling the effects of seeing.
Light as a subject has become increasingly important in these works. I am drawn to the way light interacts with the horizon, that particular place where the sky touches the land. I find the elusive intersection to be energetic and moving, as if it were pulling us to a brighter place that is so far away that it would be hard to reach before it changes.
