This exhibition of paintings reflects Glenn Suokko’s latest explorations in the still life genre. In this body of work, the picture plane is flattened, and the suggested forms are reduced to become ambiguous symbols of common utilitarian objects—bowls, vessels, bottles, coffee cups, glasses. The work leans toward the carefully considered arrangement of positive and negative two-dimensional spaces. As part of the image making, Suokko draws into the paint with oil sticks or scratches lines out of the paint, echoing shapes or defining new forms.
“This creative process provides me the opportunity for inventiveness and combines my interest in two-dimensional design with theorized, artful expression where the boundaries between tradition and abstraction are freely pushed as a way of rethinking what generally accepted requirements make a still life painting.”
